FED: Qantas to meet with unions on Thursday =2

Qantas executive general manager human resources Kevin Brown said almost all unionsrecognised the devastating impact on the aviation industry of the September 11 terroristattacks.

He said more than 300,000 jobs had been lost worldwide in the past seven months.

Late last year Qantas began its wage negotiations, asking unions to accept a 12 month pay pause.

Negotiations with the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU) and the AustralianWorkers Union (AWU) are yet to be finalised.

But Mr Brown said the airline hoped to finalise an agreement on a wage pause with maintenanceunions sometime this week.

"We have been meeting with the AWU and the AMWU regularly since January," he said in a statement.

"We are working this week to close these last two agreements for a wage pause."

Mr Brown said the meeting with unions in Sydney on Thursday, came as the airline attemptedto finalise all wage agreements for this financial year.

Comment was being sought from unions.
