Fed: Terror strike on Aust possible - PM

CANBERRA, Aug 8 AAP - A terrorist strike on the Australian mainland was "a grim possibility",Prime Minister John Howard said today.

Mr Howard said that this week's bombing of the JW Marriott Hotel in Jakarta, whichkilled 10 people, was a reminder of how unstable the region was, and that Australia wasnot immune from terrorism.

"We are working closely with our partners and friends in the region, but we are realisticthat there could be more terrorist attacks, and there could be terrorist attacks on theAustralian mainland," Mr Howard told Melbourne Radio 3AW.

"That is a grim possibility."

Mr Howard said that, although Australia was more secure than other nations in the region, there was no room for complacency.

"We are living in a region which is unstable," he said.

"We are clearly a more stable country than any in the region. We are clearly a countrythat is freer of some of the threats that exist in other countries. But we are not immune, and we should not imagine that we are immune."

Mr Howard said he did not want to alarm people, but he wanted to be frank about thepossibility of terrorism in Australia.
